Chapter Nineteen
Leira rushed outside, passing through the wall of wards, the energy swirling through her and stepped out onto the hard concrete of the sidewalk, the cold air taking away the last remnants of the calm buzz. It was nice while it lasted. "Felix!"
The slightly rumpled man in a long wool coat turned around, his full head of salt and pepper hair neatly combed back. "A man of contradictions, as usual. Felix Hagan!"
Hagan threw up his hands in exasperation. "Both names. That has to be trouble. I finally found you! Are you okay?"
Leira didnât answer him and ran the last few feet between them and wrapped her arms tightly around his neck.
"What's this? Okay, alright. Hey, seriously, are you okay?" Hagan hugged her and tried to take a step back and get a better look at her. "I've been looking for you all over town, kid. Didn't you get any of my messages? I went by Estelle's and there was no Estelle's!" He ran his hand down the front of his old red tie with tiny TNT's all over it and small embroidered explosions.
"I'm fine, we're all good. I've missed you. Look at you. You wore your favorite tie. This must be a big trip." The feeling of calm began to return to her until she realized Hagan never took pleasure trips away from the sanctuary.
"I had a funeral to attend. I needed to say goodbye to Pete Jenkins. That's why I'm looking for you. I heard you made a visit to the old precinct."
"Right, he was your old partner." Leira pulled out her phone. "I've been traveling from one magical place to another lately. They're not great for phone signals. You left three voice mails?"
"You can delete those. They just increase in volume. No need for anyone to hear that last one."
"I'm sorry I worried you, but I didn't know you were coming." Leira wrinkled her forehead. "I could have done a better job of staying in touch."
"Hey, don't give it another thought. You were on the run half the time and the other half you were hunting monsters. Besides, Lois and Patsy kept me up to date, well, mostly."
"They're still together. Amazing."
"Yeah, working for someone, but they won't say who or for what."
Hagan pulled a white handkerchief out of his back pocket and wiped his face. "I got word about the arrangements at the last minute, but I was looking for you anyway. Rose and I are thinking of leaving the sanctuary and coming back to Austin."
Leira put her hands on the top of her head. "How is that even possible? What about Rose?"
"Harkin found a cure for her, finally. He never gave up. A rather nice outcome from being able to mix technology and magic." Hagan paced in front of the Jackalope, talking with his hands. "It's time. We've been there for over thirty years, not aging at all. That's weirder than you think."
"I know."
"It's been nice, but I wasn't really cut out for sitting in a magical forest knowing the world was still moving on out there somewhere.
